Some of the greatest authors in history have indulged in our favorite herb. Whether looking for UFOs or recreating Paris on the page, authors turned to Mary Jane for a little help. Here are the top nine authors who smoked weed, and the backstories to their ganja-fueled adventures.
1. Stephen King
One of the most prolific authors who smoked weed is Stephen King. The master of the horror genre, King is best known for The Shining, It and Carrie. He also has a long history of drug use.
In an interview with Rolling Stone from 2014, King describes how his binge drinking turned into a cocaine addiction in the late ’70s. King confesses, “I was a heavy user from 1978 until 1986.”
Though King maintained a stable family life and wrote profusely during this period, King’s drug use began showing in his writing.
“Misery is a book about cocaine,” King states. “Annie Wilkes is cocaine. She was my number-one fan.”
Weed, however, was a different story for King. Way back in 1981, High Times interviewed Stephen King, who argued for weed legalization.
“I think that marijuana should not only be legal, I think it should be a cottage industry,” King told us.
Though King confessed he doesn’t smoke much anymore, he did enjoy a good mellow high at the movies. “It’s kind of interesting and they have all the good munchie food.” We hear you, Stephen.
