Marijuana Candy Sickens 10-Year-Old Rockland Boy; Dad Charged

admin National Marijuana News

A 10-year-old boy was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern Sunday evening after eating cannabis-laced gummy candy, Ramapo police said.

The boy ate at least one piece of candy containing 25 mg of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the chemical responsible for most of the psychological effects of marijuana, Ramapo Police Lt. Robert Lancia said in a statement.

He was treated and eventually released.

Lancia said the boy’s father, Ephraim Zagelbaum, 37, of Spring Valley, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a class-A misdemeanor, for leaving the boy alone in a car with the tainted candy.

“The child saw candy and did what most children would have done,” the lieutenant said. “He ate some.”

Labeled FlavRX, the package contained 10 pieces of “pink lemonade belts” infused with medical marijuana. It carries warnings that the candies are infused with medical cannabis and that they should be kept out of the reach of children and animals.

The package was taken into evidence “for property testing and weighing pending additional possession charges,” Lancia said.

“Marijuana comes in many forms,” the statement said. “Just as any other drug, prescribed or not, there are precautions that must be taken to protect others, especially young children.”
