Extensive Medical Research on the Effects of Marijuana on the Kidneys Turns Up Nothing

admin National Marijuana News

With so little serious research conducted on the health effects of cannabis use, when little gems of information like what was recently released from the Harvard University’s School of Public Health comes out we want to analyze it in detail. This study focused on the impacts of marijuana consumption on the kidneys with over 14,000 subjects.

The kidneys filter out harmful substances from blood like alcohol and when too much alcohol is introduced to a system, it can change the function of the kidneys, keeping it from doing its job like regulating water. THC and other cannabinoids do not seem to change the function of the kidneys based off of the this study, however more in-depth research will have to be conducted.

“Our research provides some reassuring evidence suggesting that there is no detrimental effect of infrequent, relatively light use of marijuana on kidney function among healthy adults under age 60,” said lead investigator Dr. Murray Mittleman. He’s a professor of epidemiology at Harvard University’s School of Public Health and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

“However, our research does not address heavy users, the elderly, or those with pre-existing chronic kidney disease,” Mittleman said in a Harvard news release. “Research is needed to evaluate the impact of marijuana use in adults 60 and over, and among those with existing or at risk of developing kidney disease.”

To investigate that, Mittleman’s team analyzed data from nearly 14,000 U.S. adults, ages 18 to 59, who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2014.

The researchers checked levels of microalbuminuria (an increase in urine albumin, which is a marker for kidney disease), and they found no association between past or current marijuana use and worsened kidney function or disease.

There are many people that believe that marijuana consumption is completely harmless from their personal experience, but others are sure that cannabis is terrible for people. There is little in this world that if consumed in abundance will not have some sort of adverse impacts on health. Do you believe that cannabis consumption is entirely harmless?
