California is Having Some Serious Marijuana Fun this St. Patrick’s Day!
Marijuana’s popularity may be hitting a pinnacle here this St. Patrick’s Day. Numbers are already showing that demand for cannabis is shooting through the roof leading into the Irish holiday and major national party day.
Authorities in California and other major cannabis destinations are sending out warnings about driving while under the influence of either alcohol or marijuana. Hopefully today will be a big day for Uber’s business as well.
Last year, California pot delivery company Eaze saw a 42 percent increase in pot orders on St. Patrick’s Day, compared to the 18 percent surge that they usually see on Fridays, according to their State of Marijuana report, which compiled data from more than 250,000 California cannabis consumers and more than 5,000 survey respondents.
This is totally in line with a trend they’re seeing: Californians are using marijuana on major “party” days in place of alcohol, reports Eaze. In fact, more than 82 percent of people surveyed said that marijuana led them to reduce their alcohol intake, and 11 percent even said they’ve quit drinking entirely in favor of weed. (It’s hard to say whether this is a good thing, considering both weed and alcohol have positive and negative effects on your health.)
The alcohol industry has already taken a real beating due to the state legalization of cannabis and has been spending money to slow the advance of marijuana’s popularity around the country. Constellation Brands, a massive distributor of alcohol even purchased a nearly 10% stake in Canada’s Canopy Growth Corporation, the largest cannabis company in the world.
Hopefully the two industries can figure it out because while marijuana does have medicinal properties, for many people both substances fill the same sort of niche. We will see this St. Patrick’s Day what kind of financial setback the alcohol industry has due to more people spending money on marijuana instead of alcohol. Have you found that your alcohol intake has decreased due to legal marijuana’s availability?
