Best Anime Series To Watch When Baked
Anime is normally defined as hand-drawn or computer animation from, or associated with, Japan. Love it or hate it, anime has grown to become one of the most loved genres by western audiences. From their depth, character development, world-building, and social messages, there are series that become iconic and epic sagas that fans follow for years on end. Some of our favorite series that are even better when indulging in a little herb are below!
Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z/Dragon Ball Super:
A massively popular and long-running series from the genius mind of Akira Toriyama, this series which made its debut all the way back in 1984 tells the tale of Goku. An alien sent to Earth to conquer the world, Goku became the planet and universe’s unlikely hero after a head wound caused the protagonist to change his ways. Kind of like Superman but raised in another dimension’s version of Japan and trained in martial arts. Heavily inspired by the classic Chinese novel, “Journey to the West,” Dragon Ball and its different iterations have found themselves into the hearts and minds of people around the globe. A good example are some of the now allowed touchdown celebrations in the NFL, where two Cleveland Browns players performed their version of the “Fusion Dance” after a score.
Naruto:
A newer epic saga about a world filled with magic and wonders, this story follows Naruto Uzumaki. An orphan and outcast due to the nine-tailed demon fox that was sealed within him and deemed a misfit by his elders, Naruto struggles for years to gain the trust and respect of everyone in his village and makes it his ultimate goal to become the Hokage (i.e. the ninja President). A personal favorite, Naruto also relates highly emotional and deep stories about what some folks would consider to be “side characters.” Boasting over 500 episodes, this one may take you a while to get through but I guarantee that it’s worth it!
Boruto:
Picking up long after Naruto left off, this new series follows the adventures of Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Naruto and his longtime love interest Hinata Hyuga. Set about 10+ years from the end of the Naruto series, it sets itself apart by having a protagonist that has basically handed everything to him, from talent to intelligence, that rebels against his war/world-hero father, complaining that he doesn’t spend enough time with his family. The interaction between the protagonist of the previous series and Boruto makes for some great drama. Also, the music and fight sequences are absolutely beautiful.
My Hero Academia:
This may be a controversial pick for some but I believe that My Hero Academia has gotten everything right from the get-go. It has done an awesome job of fleshing out its many protagonists, over 40+ side characters (20 “main characters” in just class 1-A alone), and villains that I’m psyched about how much I know about everyone’s past and motivations. Add to that the ridiculously awesome visuals and music that have been produced for this ongoing series and you have yourself one of the *best animes ever made.
