“You idiot!”: Cursing councilman goes on tirade against marijuana advocates: Colfax Mayor pro tem Tony Hesch cursed out a resident last week during a City Council meeting for interrupting him during a debate on keeping some marijuana policies under local control in the California city. Hesch referred to pro-marijuana advocates as “people who have wasted our freaking time” over the last three years and then flew into a rage when residents continued to question the council. “I was the one speaking, you idiot!” Hesch yelled, slamming his fist onto a table. “You shut the (expletive) up when somebody’s talking.” –Report by The Sacramento Bee’s Benjy Egel
Alcohol goliath pours $190M into Canadian cannabis company: Constellation Brands, the alcohol goliath that two years ago acquired craft beer darling Ballast Point Brewing Co. for $1 billion, is putting its money toward another emerging sector — cannabis-based beverages. The Victor, N.Y.-based company plans to spend C$245 million ($190.88 million USD) to acquire a 9.9 percent stake in Canopy Growth Corp., the companies announced. Canopy, itself a giant in the emerging Canadian and international cannabis markets, produces and sells marijuana through its brands such as Tweed. –Report by The Cannabist’s Alicia Wallace
Denver approves smoking and vaping ban for its downtown street mall: Smokers and vapers on Denver’s 16th Street Mall are now on notice: Starting Dec. 1, they will need to walk at least 50 feet down a side street before lighting up or puffing. The Denver City Council approved the public smoking ban 9-0 on Monday night, ending a weeks-long debate about how best to ensure that police don’t use the new restrictions to single out the homeless or service workers on their smoke breaks. –Report by The Denver Post’s Jon Murray
