Tennessee Medical Marijuana Passes Major Hurdle, But Many More to Come
The House Criminal Justice subcommittee voted in a dramatic fashion on Tuesday to pass the Medical Cannabis Only Act which is the furthest step Tennessee medical marijuana has ever taken. The vote was tied 3 to 3 in the 6 person subcommittee forcing the House Republican Speaker to cast a vote, which came out as what seemed a timid, yes.
Before the vote was made groups and individuals were given the opportunity to speak concerning their reasoning behind supporting or opposing medical marijuana. Not surprisingly, many of the arguments for or against medical marijuana are the same in Tennessee as they are in all the other states.
“I am not here to practice medicine,” said Tennessee Sheriff’s Association Executive Director Terry Ashe. “We are here to ask you all to understand we are not going to support Schedule I drugs in the state.”
“The majority of the conditions either have no support…or are limited in the National Academy of Medicine review,” testified Dr. Warren.
“I am here because I know it works,” mother Stacie Mathes said. “If we had THC when we had the four medications she was on, it would not have taken us 11-months and days and days and days of withdrawals.”
The bill called the Medical Cannabis Only Act does not allow smoking or inhaling of the plant.
“A friend of my son’s, a good family friend had been deployed to Afghanistan three times and had some PTSD. His doctor told his mother to get him some marijuana. It worked for him,” Fitzhugh said. “It made me look into the situation and found it was indeed a viable alternative, a viable medication.”
It is a very limited medical marijuana bill that does not have a great chance of getting much further in Tennessee with votes still having to be made by two other committees and then the senate.
