Some Of Our Favorite Stoners In Movies
The portrayal of marijuana enthusiasts in movies can be hit or miss but thankfully they are beginning to be more nuanced as weed use is becoming more and more mainstream around the globe. However, there have been some that (despite some of their stereotypical stoner traits) many of us can relate to or find hilariously cartoonish. Here’s some of our favorite portrayal of stoners from cinema!
“Floyd”- True Romance (1993):
This early Tarantino pic follows Alabama and Clarence Worley (played by Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater, respectively) who find themselves on the run from the mob after stealing quite a bit of cocaine from Alabama’s former pimp. In this classic flick, a young Brad Pitt plays a very oblivious stoner named Floyd that’s currently living on Michael Rappaport’s character’s couch at his home in L.A. Although he inadvertently ends up helping the bad guys, we really can’t fault him as he was just trying to be a genuinely helpful guy.
“Slater”- Dazed and Confused (1993):
“Slater-san!” In this coming of age comedy film written and directed by Richard Linklater, it’s the last day of school at a high school in the suburbs of Austin, Texas in 1978 and the next year’s group of seniors are preparing for the annual hazing of incoming freshmen and looking forward to a massive party at the end of the night. Towards the end of the evening, the senior’s resident pothead, Ron Slater (portrayed masterfully by Rory Cochrane), waxes historical about how the founding fathers, especially George Washington, were big into weed.
“Grandma”- Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996):
“Don’t Be a Menace” is a 1996 crime comedy parody film produced and written by the Wayans brothers, who also starred in several of the leading roles. In this hilarious spoof film, veteran actress Helen Dorothy Martin plays a “gansta” granny who enjoys roughhousing, smoking weed, drinking 40’s, and cruising around in her souped up ’64 while blasting Wu-Tang.
“The Dude”- The Big Lebowski (1998):
In this classic from the talented Coen brothers, Jeff Bridges stars as Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, an all around slacker, pothead, and competitive bowler who gets wrapped up in some hilarious drama due to a case of mistaken identity. Forced to deal with various unusual situations like getting coerced into delivering ransom money, being attacked by nihilists, and having his rug stolen, the Dude relies on a little bit of green and more than a few white Russians to help him get by.
“The snozberries guy”- Super Troopers (2000):
In this 2000 cult comedy from the folks at Broken Lizard, Geoffrey Arend’s character is forced to eat what some would call a “heroic” dose of magic mushrooms and weed when he and his buddies get pulled over. Needless to say, he is not doing so great after a while when the drugs finally start to kick in, leading him to utter the iconic line “The snozberries taste like snozberries!” as he licks the transparent partition between the front and back of the police cruiser. While he doesn’t have a lot of screen time, almost everyone has heard about “the snozberries guy.”
What are some of your favorite marijuana loving characters?
