Marijuana Policy Advocate to Testify at New Hampshire Study Commission Meeting Monday

Policy experts to explain impacts of regulating marijuana for adults in New Hampshire

CONCORD, N.H. — On Monday, the third meeting of New Hampshire’s marijuana legalization study commission will take place in Concord. Three experts, including a marijuana policy advocate, will present information about the potential impacts of legalizing, regulating, and taxing marijuana for adults.

The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Room 202 of the Legislative Office Building in Concord. Matt Simon, Manchester-based New England political director for the Marijuana Policy Project, will testify along with representatives of the state banking and agriculture departments.

“Although the study commission is largely comprised of reform opponents, their interest in learning more about the issue is encouraging” Simon said. “This is an opportunity to show the commissioners how regulating marijuana for adults can benefit the Granite State, and how we can learn from other states that are successfully doing so. If the commissioners are able to set aside their personal biases, they will see that marijuana prohibition has failed and Granite Staters are ready for a new approach.”

“Marijuana is objectively safer than alcohol, and more than two-thirds of New Hampshire residents want the state to start treating it that way,” he said.

Eight states have enacted laws legalizing and regulating marijuana for adult use, including Massachusetts and Maine, all through ballot initiatives. A poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center in April and May of 2017 found that 68% of Granite Staters support legalizing marijuana.
