Odell Beckham Sr., the patriarch of New York Giant’s flashy wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., was reportedly arrested  in Texas on Wednesday for illegal possession of weed and a gun,

Odell’s Dad Arrested

Texas Authorities claim that the elder Odell was carrying a gun and a small amount of weed on him at the time of the arrest. While there are little details surrounding the arrest at the moment, officials say Beckham was arrested on charges of “unlawful carrying weapon” and “possession of marijuana under 2 ounces.” The exact amount of pot he was carrying was not indicated in the report.

According to TMZ Sports, Beckham was later taken to a nearby police station, where he was booked and posed for a less-than-flattering mug shot. He was then released on $5,000 bail.

Much like his protege son, Beckham Sr. played for Louisiana State University. As a running back for the Tigers in the early 1990’s, Beckham amassed 757 yards and 7 touchdowns over three seasons in a backup role.

The much more prolific Beckham Jr. is currently sidelined for the remainder of the 2017 NFL season with a fractured ankle he sustained during the Giants’ loss to the San Diego Chargers on October 8th.

Final Hit: Odell Beckham’s Father Arrested For Weed Possession And Gun Charges

While Beckham’s unlawful firearm possession certainly warrants legal action, it’s safe to say the weed charges remain quite trivial. Unfortunately for the elder Beckham, Texas is far from an ideal state to be caught with some ganja.

Beckham was caught with less than 2 ounces of bud, which remains a misdemeanor in Texas, but could carry some serious repercussions, regardless. The charge can carry a maximum fine of $2,000, and if convicted, the perpetrator could face up to 180 days in jail (talk about a waste of taxpayer dollars). Possession of marijuana between 2-4 oz is also considered a misdemeanor, with a max fine of $4,000 and a possible one-year jail sentence.

To get into felony territory, one must have between 4oz and 5 lbs and could face a fine of up to $10,000, and a minimum jail sentence of 180 days, with a maximum of two years. You can check out the rest of Texas’ penalties here.

Despite its somewhat stringent policies regarding recreational cannabis, Texas has, slowly but surely, become more weed-friendly. Medical marijuana is now available in Texas, albeit, with somewhat strict regulations. For starter’s it’s only permitted to be used by epilepsy patients. And unlike other states where it’s legal, Texas requires a doctor’s written prescription, rather than just a recommendation. Additionally, medical cannabis in Texas cannot exceed 0.5 percent THC, which in some cases, isn’t strong enough to properly work for epilepsy.

Texas is also set to open its first-ever dispensary in Schulenburg, Texas this December.

Maybe Beckham Sr. can say he just has a serious case of epilepsy.
