Here’s What to Watch on Netflix This Month While Lit
If you’re like me, being high and having too many options to choose from is a challenge. That’s one of the problems with Netflix. When I’m trying to take a dab, hit my couch, and enjoy my life, Netflix’s infinite list of streamable entertainment makes that impossible. You can’t decide what to watch so after an hour of scrolling you end up watching the same episode of The Office you always do (“Threat Level Midnight”), and go to bed.
So, I made it my mission to get very high and watch almost every new release on Netflix for May (and a few from April) to make your life easier. My goal is to curate a variety of shows and movies for every mood you may encounter. These are the best new Netflix releases to watch while lit.
John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous Live at Radio City
Stand up comedy from one of the world’s best comedians.
John Mulaney’s stand-up is the perfect thing to watch while hitting a hybrid. Just like my favorite strain, his comedy is a perfect balance between heady thought-provoking ideas, like questioning colleges asking for donations after you’ve already paid them a ludicrous amount of money, and silly belly laughs about his mom seeing ghosts. It was so good I forgot to mindlessly check my Instagram for an entire hour. He wrote for Saturday Night Live, performed on Broadway with Nick Kroll, and has an adorable French Bulldog named Petunia. What more could you want?
Nailed It
It’s like if Bobby Flay was terrible at his job.
This is the funniest cooking show since FOREVER. Amateur bakers try to recreate complicated desserts with disastrous results. Host Nicole Byer (Loosely Exactly Nicole, Girl Code) is hilarious, ruthlessly honest, and the perfect host for a show so silly and yet so earnest. It’s the perfect thing to flip on after a long day at work, while eating a big bowl of pasta, and realize at least your life is better than these flailing contestants. Or, in a perfect world, you should eat an edible an hour before you plan to watch this so you feel like cake tastes: delicious.
Dude
“It’s female Super Bad!” – Alexandra Shipp
What Broad City did for television, Dude is doing for movies. It’s the first-ever female-driven cannabis comedy whose cast would be amazingly fun to toke up with: shout out Lucy Hale, Kathryn Prescott, Awkwafina, and Alexandra Shipp! On the surface, this film could easily have been a ‘go for easy laughs’ story, but writer/director Olivia Milch nails the relatability of graduating high school and friendships breaking apart which makes the laughs that much tastier. Invite your friends over, roll a blunt, order take-out, and come together for this groundbreaking piece of cannabis history.
Evil Genius
“2:28pm. August 28, 2003. A man walks into a bank with a bomb locked around his neck. This is a true story.”
Is this the best to watch while high? For me, yes because I love taking dabs and binging true crime, but real talk, it’s grisly, captivating, and unbelievable. Writer/director Barbara Schroeder unravels this dizzying tale so masterfully that I forgot to sleep and saw the sunrise as the doc ended. If you like being baked and shaking your head going, “oh no, oh no no no,” this is for you.
Dear White People: Vol. 2
A cross between wanting to angrily scream at your screen, and yelling “That’s what’s up!”
DWP is your perfect opportunity to roll up a turkey leg sized-joint with some friends because this show is all about building community. Writer/director Justin Simien’s Twitter bio says, “Shade is my love language.” Yuuuup! This show is super-charged shade while being one of the most relevant, wisely satirical shows anywhere. It’s a show for everyone and about everyone, leaning in hard on topics like alt-right internet trolls, racial tension, and sexuality. The show’s star, Logan Browning, effortlessly toes the line between being funny and acerbic and in her words, “a leader of a movement”. Plus, the soundtrack is fire!
The Clapper
You’ll never look at late night infomercials the same way again.
No one says ‘Netflix and chill’ anymore, but that’s exactly what this movie is perfect for – smooching! Grab an indica heavy hybrid, some canna-lube and enjoy as Ed Helms and Tracy Morgan play extras in infomercials who’s worlds are turned upside down when a late-night show makes them Hollywood headlines. Helms and Morgan have an onscreen chemistry you’d never expect, but can’t look away from. Amanda Seyfried is the film’s standout star acting circles around everyone. Russell Peters plays such a convincing talk show host he may end up with his own network show if they stop making awful TV about Candy Crush and Shazam. The story is heartwarming, funny, and if you end up with your pants off and miss the end that’s ok… in fact that’s a great ending in itself.
Hari Kondabolu: Warn Your Relatives
Political comedy so smartly funny you’ll laugh as much as you’ll squirm.
Hari drew our attention to the problematic nature of Apu from The Simpsons with his documentary “The Problem with Apu”. His stand up comedy is politically and racially charged with healthy sprinkles of Illuminati talk for seasoning. I loved it. Take a few big ‘ol bong rips of a sativa, and see if you agree.
